A Little Building with a Big History
For over 300 years in the small town of Sanquhar, this little Post Office has existed in the same building. In 1966 it was acknowledged as "The Oldest Working Post Office" anywhere in the world, and this was ratified in 2009 by "The Guiness Book of World Records".
The certificate states: "The Oldest Working Post Office is located in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, UK. It has been operating continuously since 1712".
Despite its' 313 year history the Sanquhar Post Office has had only 16 Post Masters under it's roof. It's current owners, Barry and Mary Ford took over in September 2023 and insist that it will be "Business as usual" for the foreseeable future.
Our Postal Services
We offer a wide range of postal services including shipping, mailing, and VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) renewals. We also carry application forms for Passport renewals and driver's licence applications.

Here at The World's Oldest Working Post Office Post Office we also have a small gift shop, where we sell stationery, cards and gifts, some of which are locally sourced and hand crafted. Our embroidered garments are all produced within the town of Sanquhar.
